Epitalon: what the evidence says

At a glance

What it is: epitalon (also spelled epithalon or epitalone) is a lab-made peptide of 4 amino acids (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, or "AEDG"). It was modeled on epithalamin, an extract from cow pineal glands, by V. Kh. Khavinson's group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. It is sold for anti-aging, "telomere lengthening," sleep and melatonin. R1, R13

What the evidence says: the telomere claims come from cells in a lab dish, not people. A change in cells isn't the same as a health benefit. The longevity claims come from animal studies and from human studies of the older extract (epithalamin), not epitalon itself. Nearly all of it comes from the developer's group or its collaborators, and much is published only in Russian. Caution Studies run by the people who developed a product may be biased toward showing it works. R1–R12

Biggest risks: no long-term safety data in people. Products sold in the US are unapproved "research use" powders with unknown contents. FDA has flagged possible immune reactions from impurities in compounded versions (prepared by pharmacies as custom medicines for individual patients, with a prescription). R15, R16

Claim Rating (proposed)
Animal Telomere lengthening No human data: cell-culture studies only (one independent); no study measured telomeres in people R1, R2, R3
Human Anti-aging / longer life in people No human data for epitalon: no outcome trial found. The human death-rate studies tested the cow-gland extract epithalamin, a different product (developer-linked) R10, R11
Human Sleep / melatonin Very limited: one developer-linked Russian-language report that lumps epitalon with the extract, no numbers, no sleep outcomes; a Paris-led rat-gland study (Khavinson co-author) found no effect R8, R9
Animal Longer life in animals No human data (animal studies only): developer-linked; no change in average lifespan, longer life in the longest-lived 10% R5, R6, R7
Regulatory Russia: no listing found Caution · US: not FDA-approved; listed by FDA as nominated but withdrawn (formerly 503A Category 2), not on the bulks list; FDA advisers reportedly backed compounding in July 2026 against FDA staff advice, no final FDA decision · WADA 2026: not named; S0 likely applies if no government has approved it R14–R17
Established human dose Unknown None. No regulator anywhere has reviewed a dose we could confirm

What is it?

Epitalon is a synthetic (lab-made) tetrapeptide, a chain of 4 amino acids (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly). It was designed from the amino-acid makeup of epithalamin, a peptide extract from cow pineal glands (the small gland in the brain that makes melatonin). Epitalon and epithalamin are not the same product, and results for one don't automatically apply to the other. R13

About the evidence

We sort studies by who did them and what kind of study they are: - Developer-linked studies: co-authored by V. Kh. Khavinson or the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. This is almost all of the evidence, including the animal lifespan studies and the human studies. Caution Why that matters: Khavinson's group developed both epithalamin and epitalon and has a stake in them working, so its studies may be biased, even unintentionally. Few results have been checked by independent labs. R1, R2, R4–R8, R10–R12 - Independent studies: a 2025 cell study from Brunel University London (authors declare no competing interests) R3, and a 2025 review from the Medical University of Warsaw (no conflicts declared) R13. A 2003 rat study was led by a Paris group, but Khavinson was a co-author, so we count it as developer-linked. R9 - By type: lab (cells in a dish), animal, and human evidence are kept in separate sections below. They answer different questions.

Access limits: we read only PubMed abstracts, not full papers. Several studies are in Russian, and much of the Russian research on epitalon is published only in Russian and isn't on PubMed at all. So we can't confirm randomization, blinding, dropouts or harms. Claims seen only in summaries, vendor pages or secondary sources are marked UNVERIFIED.

Does it lengthen telomeres?

Animal In cells in a lab dish, reportedly yes. In people, we don't know. Telomeres are protective caps on the ends of chromosomes (the packages that hold our DNA), a bit like the plastic tips on shoelaces. They get shorter each time a cell divides. - In human fetal lung cells, the developer's group reported that epitalon switched on telomerase (the enzyme that rebuilds telomeres). It also reported longer telomeres. R1 In a follow-up, treated cells made 10 extra divisions beyond the control cells. R2 - An independent UK lab reported that epitalon lengthened telomeres in normal human cells and in breast cancer cell lines. In the cancer cells this happened through a different route (ALT, "alternative lengthening of telomeres"). R3 Longer telomeres in cancer cells is not obviously a good thing. This has not been studied in people.

A change in cells isn't the same as a health benefit. No study we found measured telomere length in people taking epitalon, or showed that a telomere change in people improves health or lifespan. UNVERIFIED Vendor claims that epitalon "reverses aging" or lengthens telomeres in humans.

Does it slow aging or extend life?

Animal In animals (developer-linked): - In 54 treated mice vs 54 controls, epitalon did not change average lifespan or total tumor rates. It increased lifespan of the longest-lived 10% by 13.3% and maximum lifespan by 12.3%, and leukemia was less common. R5 - In female rats, it did not change lifespan under a normal light cycle. Under constant or natural northern light, maximum lifespan was longer. R6 - In fast-aging mice, results were mixed. Tumor rates weren't changed. R7

Human In people: no epitalon outcome trial found. The human death-rate figures that vendors cite are for epithalamin (the cow-gland extract), not epitalon. They are a different product, so these results cannot be applied to epitalon: - A 12-year study in older people with heart disease (described as randomized in the abstract) reported 28% fewer deaths with epithalamin than in the control group. Khavinson is a co-author. Group sizes, blinding and dropouts aren't in the abstract. R11 - A 6–8 year study of 266 older people reported lower death rates with epithalamin and/or thymalin (another extract). It was run by the developer's institute. R10 Animal Human cells in a dish (epitalon itself): in blood cells taken from people aged 75–88 and treated in a dish, epitalon changed how tightly DNA was packed. This is a lab change, not a health benefit, and not data from people taking it. R4, R12

Does it help sleep or melatonin?

Human We don't know. - A developer-linked Russian-language report said epithalamin and epitalon raised night-time melatonin in older people with low levels and in old monkeys. The abstract reports the two products together, so we can't tell what epitalon did on its own. It gives no numbers, no placebo and no sleep outcomes. R8 A higher melatonin level is a lab change. It isn't the same as better sleep. - A related study of the extract only (epithalamin, not epitalon; developer-linked) reported melatonin went up in older people with low levels and tended to go down in those with normal levels. R19 - Animal In a Paris-led rat study (Khavinson co-author), epitalon had no significant effect on melatonin release from rat pineal glands. R9

We found no trial measuring sleep in people taking epitalon.

Is it safe?

What we don't know

Is it legal?

As of Oct 15, 2026.

What's in the vial?

Unknown For "research use" or fake (counterfeit) products, the contents are unknown. Scientists at Belgium's national public health institute identified epitalon in two illegal pharmaceutical preparations (published 2015). R16 We found no published testing of US retail product purity. We test retail products blind under the Open Peptide Standard. See results at /tests/. A passing test covers one batch, tested on one date. It does not mean the compound itself is safe.
